A colossal cicada sculpture is displayed on the river side of the Burpee Museum of Natural History. The mosaic sculpture is approximately 8 feet long with some glow-in-the-dark tiles. The artist, Susan Burton, worked with middle and high school-aged students at the RAAC Summer SPARK! program to complete this sculpture. Working on a 3D sculpture engages students’ hands and many parts of their brains in sensory experiences. The Burpee Museum also helped educate the students on the magic of the cicadas and their emergence! Students also helped complete a cicada mural cut out for an interactive photo opportunity. Created by artist, Susan Burton, assisted by apprentices and SPARK! student artists.
