06/15/2017 - The Shumway presents Cultivation

The Shumway is pleased to announce the opening of CULTIVATION, a new and original play by Connie Kuntz, with live music by Matthew Flamm, choreography by Caitlyn Baylor and Meghan Baylor, and a cast of versatile actors including Jesse Kuntz, Sharon Nesbit-Davis, Jennifer Rea, and thirteen children.

CULTIVATION, through humor and intensity, explores the cults that form in the natural wilderness, the political wilderness, and the creative wilderness. Commemorating the 28-year anniversary of the Tiananmen Square Massacre, CULTIVATION features historical characters such as Mao Zedong, Margaret Thatcher, George H.W. Bush, Mikhail Gorbachev, and Soong Mei-Ling.  The setting takes place in the forest, and in Tiananmen Square, and the creative wilderness.

CULTIVATION is the fourth new play to take place at The Shumway since it was renovated from an office space into a performance venue and art gallery.  Though tiny, The Shumway is an historic building that is perfect for presenting historical events through the lens of theatre and art. The Shumway is Rockford's tiniest performance space, but grand art is taking place for sure.  The space is viable for theatre, dance, music, poetry, art, film and so much more.  We encourage everyone to come check it out!

Performances on June 22, 23, 24, 29 and 30 at 6:30 p.m. and a 2:00 p.m. matinee on Sunday, June 25 at The Shumway, 713 E. State Street in Rockford. Tickets are $5 and reservations are highly encouraged.  Call 815-963-6765 to reserve your ticket or stop by the office Monday-Thursday from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. or Friday from 9 a.m.-Noon.
