The Rockford Area Arts Council "ArtsPlace", summer arts apprenticeship program for youth between 14-18 years old began June 29. The youth work under the direction of professional artists to create art to sell and perform for the public. ArtsPlace increases artistic skills and provides work experience for future employment and college applications.
Youth work as apprentices in teams and create work individually and collectively. Proceeds earned from tickets and art sales are awarded to the youth based on points earned for punctuality, productivity, and demonstrating initiative. Since 1995 more than 1,200 youth have benefited from ArtsPlace apprenticeships and this summer marks the twenty-first year of the program.
ArtsPlace will be held from June 29-August 10, Monday-Fridays, 12:30-4:30 PM. 2015 teams and artists include Dance (Rockford Dance Company), Visual Arts-printmaking, mixed media, and mural (Bruce McDonald, Corey Hagberg, various guest artists) and Interdisciplinary Performance Arts-theater, poetry, creative writing, etc. (TBA).
